Summer 2017 fashion is upon us. The stores are starting to fill with fun, colourful prints and whimsical patterns. While spring is all about the soft hues and pops of colour, summer is feeling bright and bold this year. Fashion is also taking a more daring turn this season, with plenty of exposed skin and form-fitting silhouettes. There are also plenty of loose dresses that just feel easy and free.
Gingham has always been a print that I felt was a little bit more old fashioned. I’m not sure exactly why I had something against the print, but it was definitely something that I would stay away from for fear of looking dated. Regardless, I still always thought it was kind of cute, so I’m actually pretty excited to see that it’s becoming a bit of a trendy print for the season.
The first dress on the left is from Asos.com. I love the off the shoulder details and the bright pom-pom trim. The shape is quite loose, but not super flowy. This shape makes it really forgiving on just about any body shape.
Dres number two is from Missguided. It’s got a similar shape to the first dress, where it’s loose but structured enough to keep its shape and hide any unflattering bits around the stomach. It also has shoulder straps, which hold everything up a little bit better. Because this dress has an “off the shoulder, oversized dress shirt” feel, I think that not having shoulder straps would make it feel like it was about to fall off! I love the pretty pink colour, I find it gives the dress an extra feminine feeling. If pink isn’t your colour, though, it’s also available in black.
The last shirt is from Nordstrom. I think this is probably the easiest way to try the trend if you’re not sure that you can pull off the dress. The cotton will feel super fresh and breezy, and the neckline of this top can be worn a couple of different ways.
Blue gingham pairs beautifully with denim. Try pairing this shirt with some comfortable, worn-in denim. For an edgier look, this top would look really cool paired with distressed denim with fishnets underneath.
Stripes are so popular right now. They have been for quite a while, but the bigger, bolder and more colourful stripes are gaining a lot of traction right now. Especially for the summer, I can’t get enough of the fun, candy coloured stripes that we’re seeing so much of.
This dress screams vacation to me. I originally saw it on Nordstrom.com, and when it wasn’t directly linked I absolutely had to search for it. I’m in love with the colours, and I just want to pair it with a wide brimmed sun hat and head to the beach. While it’s a fairly casual dress, I think you could easily dress it up for a night out as well.
Number two is this really fun crop top from Bershka. If you’re lucky enough to be living in Europe or Mexico (I’m not sure where else) you may be able to find this in store, but if not, it’s available from Asos.com.
I like that this top is cropped, but not so short that you’re showing everything. I’m not ready to show quite that much skin yet. Plus, I’m really loving the “Bardot” sleeves, which isn’t something that I had seen a lot of until recently. They’re a fun trend on their own that makes anything feel just a little bit more glam.
If you’re looking for a much more classic, safe way to wear stripes but you still want to stay “on-trend”, this dress by Halogen is probably right up your alley. It’s short, but not too short. It has half sleeves and a modest neckline, and it’s loose without being too shapeless. With the addition of the soft bell sleeves, it makes a really nice trendy piece that will be easily recycled for future seasons without looking out of place.
While I’m definitely a bit scared to wear a bralette all on its own as a top, I still adore the trend. Once I’m back in good shape I hope I can be rocking these cute styles all the time. Bralettes are not new to summer 2017 fashion, they have been popular for quite a while, but with the warmer weather (and festival season) they are more popular than ever.
I feel like this one from Topshop would also be really cute for layering. It’s got the lingerie appeal with the eyelash lace, but because it has a little bit more coverage (it doesn’t look entirely like a bra) it still passes as a top.
Number two is the most casual of them all, and also the most versatile, standalone piece of the three. It’s actually a crop top and not a bralette. The pale blue, or any blue, really is a really trendy colour for the moment, and again, I’m loving the “Bardot” sleeves. They take what would otherwise be a risque tube top and make it feel a little bit more modest. But not really. It still shows quite a bit of skin, but it sill feels tasteful. This piece also looks really comfortable and airy. Perfect for a summer afternoon with a slight breeze.
I thought this last piece was really fun because it combined two or three trends in one. White is really popular right now, and always a really fresh shade for summer that will make a tan look gorgeous. It also combines the crop or bralette trend with the faux choker. Again, this top feels a little risque worn alone, but it would look gorgeous layered with the right pieces.
Cutouts are a trend that can be really sexy if they’re well done. When they’re taken from the sides they can also be very flattering and slimming. Like crop tops, they can be a little bit intimidating at first, but I’ve managed to find a couple of really pretty pieces that go from barely there to a little bolder. In any trend, there’s always something for everyone.
I love florals, and I love little cutouts. So, naturally, I am in love with this maxi dress from Asos.com. While I’m loving the bright, bold prints that are really popular right now, I also really enjoy how fresh and delicate this dress feels with the pastel florals.
Another great place to look for cutouts is swimsuits! Swimsuits with cutout sides are great if you’re not quite feeling the bikini, but you also don’t want to be stuck in a boring one-piece. The shape of the suit will help to give the illusion of a smaller waistline, which make them flattering on a great variety of body shapes and sizes. Plus, they’re pretty secure. You won’t have to worry about losing part of your suit when you dive into the pool! (Trust me, it can happen! No fun at all!)
If you love the bralette trend, and you love the cutout trend, this romper will tick all the right boxes. It’s basically the two combined into a cute outfit. While it may not work for all social events, this is a piece that can absolutely be dressed up or dressed down depending on the occasion.
I have two bodysuits to talk about, which is surprising considering how much I love them. I find that a lot of the bodysuits that I am seeing at the moment are a little too much for me. As much as I love the other trends, one of the reasons I truly love bodysuits is because they can work like an extra-flattering t-shirt. They stay tucked in. They smooth your shape. What’s not to love?
My favourite is by Kendall + Kylie. This is why I love bodysuits. It’s a gorgeous t-shirt that is just slightly off the shoulder. It’s so flattering, and the thin stripes will shrink your waistline a bit. And while I did say I love my bodysuits plain, this one does have a cutout back. It’s a bit sexy, but still really versatile. If you choose one thing off this list, this should be it.
I did still want to include a more dressy body suit, too. This one from Asos.com is really pretty and would look beautiful as part of an evening outfit. Like all bodysuits, this streamlines your shape for a polished look. The lace and off the shoulder detailing are sexy but not too over the top. While I don’t know what event I’d wear this to, I really love the look! I think it could look really cute paired with a nice skirt for that polished evening look. Part of me also wants to pair it with fitted black denim, a leather jacket and red lipstick for a really pretty bad-girl look. So it’s still versatile.
