You know that feeling when you buy something new, and it’s perfect. It would be so nice if your clothes could stay looking that way forever. Unfortunately, things get dirty and smelly and need to be washed, no matter how careful we are with them. That being said, there are things you can do to prevent a lot of the wear on your clothes. So, here are my top tips for keeping your clothes looking like new.
Wash when necessary.
Not everything has to be washed every time you wear it. This is especially true with knitwear and denim. Unless you spill something, or they are visibly dirty, you can probably skip washing these pieces. If they’re a little bit smelly, you can refresh them with a touch of fabric refresher and pop them in the freezer overnight. The less you wash things, the longer they will stay looking like new.
Handwash when possible.
This may seem like a lot of work, but it doesn’t have to be! If you wash things as you wear them, or at least regularly, it should only take a few minutes. For intimates, keep a small bottle of Woolite in the shower and hand wash your bra or undies while your conditioner sits. Knitwear can be washed in the bathroom sink, then just lay them flat to dry. I have this mesh drying rack from Amazon.com (Amazon.ca) and I just leave it in the shower.
For things that don’t really need to be hand washed, but could still do well skipping the washing machine (that thing is ROUGH) I sometimes use the Wonderwash, also available from Amazon.com (Amazon.ca). I love this for thin t-shirts and blouses that could be ruined by a snag on something from the washing machine such as an open zipper.
De-fuzz your clothes.
One of the first signs of wear on almost any article of clothing are pills. While you can’t prevent them entirely, careful washing will mean that they will take much longer to start to appear. When they do eventually show up, there’s a little gadget that you can use to get rid of them. This fabric shaver by Conair has a rechargeable battery, as well as a plug. Amazon.com (Amazon.ca) You can also use an old razor, but it will take much longer.
